A leading retailer in Singapore has withdrawn a cosmetics range with a Jesus theme after complaints from local Roman Catholics, local media report.
The range, named Lookin' Good for Jesus, was on sale at three Topshop outlets in the Asian city state.

Catholics complained the cosmetics' marketing was disrespectful, full of sexual innuendo and trivialised Christianity.

About 15% of Singapore's 4.4 million population is Christian.

The products included a "Virtuous vanilla" lip balm and a "Get Tight with Christ" hand and body cream, featuring a picture of Christ flanked by two adoring women.

"Why would anyone use religious figures to promote vanity products? It's very disrespectful and distasteful," the Straits Times newspaper quoted accountant Grace Ong, 24, as saying.

A spokesman for the Wing Tai company, which runs Topshop's outlets in Singapore, told the newspaper it did not want to offend its customers, and withdrew the products last month.

It was not clear whether other shops were still selling the range, which is produced by the US-based company, Blue Q.

How do i apply liquid blush?

Well, i'm thinking of buying a liquid blush,since the last blush i bought was a little too dark for my skin (it was a dark pink,so it got too pink on my fair but a little yellow skin - this next blush i'm planning on buying a peach one - maybe i'll look that i got suntanned), so i almost don't use it. But i have a little problem. i don't know how to apply the liquid blush correctly since i've never used it before.

Here are 4 techniques that you can try.

1) First apply the liquid or stain directly onto a latex sponge (wedge). Press the sponge onto the apple of your cheek in a slow circular motion.

When you press the sponge to your cheek, the liquid will seep out and the circular motion will spread the product.

2) Pour some of the blush into a small flat container, (dish). Using M.A.C.'s #192 brush (which is made specifically for liquid and creme blushes), dip the flat end of the tip into the liquid blush and using the flat side of the brush, apply in a circular motion onto the apple of the cheek.

3) Repeat step 2. Instead of the M.A.C. brush. Use a red stipple sponge. Dip the sponge into the liquid blush and shake off any excess liquid and apply in a stippling circular motion onto the apple of the cheek.

Because the red stipple sponge is rubber, it won't soak up the product, however it will deposit more colour onto the cheek.

4) You can use your fingers, be aware of your blending and your finger pad pressure. Too much pressure, you'll have a light spot and darker edges.

However, fingers are best when applying liquids and stains to your lips... see...

Depending on the Brand, some stains will show the colour immediately, some will take a few seconds.

If you try and fix it by adding and tweaking, your blush will have a "layered" look, starting from lighter to progressively darker.

As with all make-up applications, it takes practice... No big deal, make-up is fun... see...

It may seem daunting at first. Applying and blending a liquid blush in less than 2 seconds that looks natural. With practice anyone can.

The achieved result is a beautiful natural blush application that looks like it's coming from under the skin. As opposed to a powder blush which is on top.

I once told a pharmacist about the lemon remedy I was using on my pimples. She was horrified. Lemons are highly acidic. Lemon juice is pH 2. Sulfuric acid is pH 1. Lemons can cause a nasty acid burn if you are not careful.
We had a discussion about this. She told me about a customer who showed up with an acid burn. Turns out, she had a sunburn. Back in Australia, she would soothe that sunburn by rubbing cut cucumber over her skin. The juices would ease the sunburn. This time around, she was unlucky. The cucumber she used was more acidic than the ones she was used to and she ended up with a really nasty acid burn.

Now that we've covered those aspects of homemade facials, let's turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.
Though cucumber is soothing, cucumber contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids as do most fruit and some of the other ingredients used in homemade beauty recipes.
You see, in home made skin care, the exact chemical makeup of the ingredients you use may vary, leading to unpleasant results if you are unfortunate. That is why, every time you make any facial mask, test it on the inside of your wrist first, before you let that mask touch your face.

I was lucky. The lemon facial I did helped clear my skin by killing the bacteria, without burning my skin. The pharmacist said I was fool hardy. As did my cousin who has been making her own beauty products for years already.
Lemon can thin the skin. It is so acidic. The pharmacist thought the other things, like the almond meal I mixed with the lemon juice helped neutralize the extreme acidity. Also, when I used freshly squeezed lemon juice directly on my face, I would dilute it with water first.

Yet the books I read with home made beauty recipes often include lemon in their recipes. After all, lemon has lightening properties. Lemon juice is often used to lighten freckles. Lemon was even recommended in a book by a former model, for use as a toner.
Not all ingredients are that dangerous though. Oats is an excellent ingredient for use in soothing facials. That was recommended to me by a doctor. For my toddler's rash. FDA has an Import Alert in effect for cosmetics labeled with drug claims. For more information on drug claims, refer to Is It a Drug, a Cosmetic, or Both? (Or Is It Soap?).

How should products be labeled if they are both drugs and cosmetics?

If a product is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug as well as a cosmetic, its labeling must comply with the regulations for both OTC drug and cosmetic ingredient labeling [21 CFR 701.3(d)]. The drug ingredients must appear according to the OTC drug labeling requirements [21 CFR 201.66(c)(2) and (d)] and the cosmetic ingredients must appear separately, in order of decreasing predominance [21 CFR 201.66(c)(8) and (d)]. Contact the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) for further information on drug labeling.

What languages are acceptable?

All labeling information that is required by law or regulation must be in English. The only exception to this rule is for products distributed solely in a U.S. territory where a different language is predominant, such as Puerto Rico. If the label or labeling contains any representation in a foreign language, all label information required under the FD&C Act must also appear in that language [21 CFR 701.2(b)].

What labeling information is required?

The following information must appear on the principal display panel:

An identity statement, indicating the nature and use of the product, by means of either the common or usual name, a descriptive name, a fanciful name understood by the public, or an illustration [21 CFR 701.11].
An accurate statement of the net quantity of contents, in terms of weight, measure, numerical count or a combination of numerical count and weight or measure [21 CFR 701.13].

The following information must appear on an information panel:

Name and place of business. This may be the manufacturer, packer, or distributor. [21 CFR 701.12].
Distributor statement. If the name and address are not those of the manufacturer, the label must say "Manufactured for..." or "Distributed by..." [21 CFR 701.12].
Material facts. Failure to reveal material facts is one form of misleading labeling and therefore makes a product misbranded [21 CFR 1.21]. An example is directions for safe use, if a product could be unsafe if used incorrectly.
Warning and caution statements. These must be prominent and conspicuous. The FD&C Act and related regulations specify warning and caution statements related to specific products [21 CFR part 700]. In addition, cosmetics that may be hazardous to consumers must bear appropriate label warnings [21 CFR 740.1]. An example of such hazardous products is flammable cosmetics.
Ingredients. If the product is sold on a retail basis to consumers, even it it is labeled "For professional use only" or words to that effect, the ingredients must appear on an information panel, in descending order of predominance. [21 CFR 701.3]. Remember, if the product is also a drug, its labeling must comply with the regulations for both OTC drug and cosmetic ingredient labeling, as stated above.

Cosmetic Labeling

The following information is a brief introduction to labeling requirements. For a more thorough explanation of cosmetic labeling regulations, refer to FDA's Cosmetic Labeling Manual and the regulations themselves (21 CFR parts 701 and 740). Firms also may wish to discuss their labeling needs with a consultant.

Proper labeling is an important aspect of putting a cosmetic product on the market. FDA regulates cosmetic labeling under the authority of both the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA). These laws and their related regulations are intended to protect consumers from health hazards and deceptive practices and to help consumers make informed decisions regarding product purchase.

It is illegal to introduce a misbranded cosmetic into interstate commerce, and such products are subject to regulatory action. Some of the ways a cosmetic can become misbranded are:

its labeling is false or misleading,
its label fails to provide required information,
its required label information is not properly displayed, and
its labeling violates requirements of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 [FD&C Act, sec. 602; 21 U.S.C. 362].

Does FDA pre-approve cosmetic product labeling?

No. FDA does not have the resources or authority under the law for pre-market approval of cosmetic product labeling. It is the manufacturer's and/or distributor's responsibility to ensure that products are labeled properly. Failure to comply with labeling requirements may result in a misbranded product.

Some labeling terms you should know

Before proceeding with a discussion of labeling requirements, it is helpful to know what some labeling terms mean:

Labeling. This term refers to all labels and other written, printed, or graphic matter on or accompanying a product [FD&C Act, sec. 201(m); 21 U.S.C. 321(m)].
Principal Display Panel (PDP). This is the part of the label most likely displayed or examined under customary conditions of display for sale [21 CFR 701.10].
Information Panel. Generally, this term refers to a panel other than the PDP that can accommodate label information where the consumer is likely to see it. Since the information must be prominent and conspicuous [21 CFR 701.2(a)(2)], the bottom of the package is generally not acceptable for placement of required information, such as the cosmetic ingredient declaration.

Is it permitted to label cosmetics "FDA Approved"?

No. As part of the prohibition against false or misleading information, no cosmetic may be labeled or advertised with statements suggesting that FDA has approved the product. This applies even if the establishment is registered or the product is on file with FDA's Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP) (see 21 CFR 710.8 and 720.9, which prohibit the use of participation in the VCRP to suggest official approval). False or misleading statements on labeling make a cosmetic misbranded [FD&C Act, sec. 602; 21 U.S.C. 362].

Decoding the Cosmetic Label

How can you be sure your shampoo that claims to have all natural ingredients does not also contain some synthetic chemicals? Or that your hand lotion actually does contain the vitamin hit claims? The logical response should be, "Read the ingredient label on the back of the product." Logical, if you happen to be a chemist or a cosmetic scientist. Perplexing, if you are the average cosmetic consumer.

A quick glance at the back of the cosmetic label is all it takes to see that the ingredients are written in the language of chemistry. (See Chemical Translations.) Unless you know that one of the shampoo ingredients--methyl paraben--is a synthetic preservative derived from a petroleum base, or that tocopherol is vitamin E, you may never be able to check the claims against the contents.

John Bailey, Ph.D., director of the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Cosmetics and Colors, understands such consumer dilemmas. He and the scientists on his staff admit that most of us don't recognize the names of the ingredients listed. But there's no way to change that and still accurately identify the ingredients.

Chemical names are the only way ingredients can be listed because that's what they are. Most are cosmetic formulations, but in some products, such as an underarm deodorant that also claims to stop perspiration, the first chemical listed may be a drug ingredient and FDA would classify the product as a drug as well as a cosmetic.

Many ingredients are marketed with trade names, but these often provide little clue to the identity and intended use of the material. Trade names in the ingredient list could be confusing to consumers purchasing a cosmetic because they would have no way to compare similar ingredients in similar products. Also, some trade names include mixtures of raw materials--for example, an ingredient could be combined with a preservative.

Despite the highly technical language of the ingredient list, Bailey says it's entirely possible for consumers to get valuable information about a product by checking the label-front and back. To decode the cosmetic label, here's what you need to know.

Image vs. Reality

Don't be fooled by claims made for certain cosmetic ingredients. Their presence in the products could be pure puffery because the law does not require cosmetic manufacturers to substantiate performance claims.

"Image is what the cosmetic industry sells through its products," Bailey says, "and it's up to the consumer to believe it or not." (See "Cosmetic Ingredients: Understanding the Puffery" in the May 1992 FDA Consumer.)

FDA considers the labeling of vitamins in cosmetics a separate issue, however, and does not recognize health claims for them in cosmetics. A product that features a vitamin--for example, vitamin E--must list it by its chemical name TOCOPHEROL on the ingredient list. Listing it as a vitamin in the ingredient statement would give the misleading impression that vitamin E in the product offers a nutrient or health benefit. (Vitamin E is usually added as an antioxidant to prevent chemical deterioration of the product.)

Consumers can get important health and value information by checking the ingredient list. For example, if you need fragrance-free hair spray because you have a sensitivity, a product containing a fragrance--even one that just masks the chemical odors of the raw materials--could be a waste of money if you can't use it.

Ingredient statements on cosmetics were first required in 1973 under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, enforced by FDA. Before then, consumers could only guess what was in a cosmetic product or if the product contained what it claimed. That requirement is especially valuable today with the industry competition for new ingredients.

The law allows a manufacturer to ask FDA to grant "trade secret" status for a particular ingredient. FDA grants this status under vary limited circumstances and after careful review of the manufacturer's data. The manufacturer must prove that the ingredient imparts some unique property to a product and that the ingredient is not well-known in the industry. If trade secret status is granted, the ingredient does not have to be listed on the label, but the list must end with the phrase "and other ingredients."

Consumers can also check value by comparing ingredient lists of similar products. Ingredients are listed in descending order, starting with the greatest amount in the product. A lotion with a featured ingredient close to the beginning of the list, for example, would have more of that ingredient than any other ingredient. A featured ingredient listed close to the end suggests that not much of that ingredient is present.

Anyone curious about an ingredient in a cosmetic can find answers in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary, published by the Cosmetic, Toiletries, and Fragrance Association. The dictionary provides a complete list of the most widely known cosmetic ingredients and their definitions and trade names. The dictionary, and all other compendia FDA recognizes to name ingredients, are available for reference at many public libraries, or at the Office of the Federal Register, 1100 L St., N.W., Washington, DC 20408.

Cosmetic ingredient declaration regulations apply only to retail products intended for home use. Products used exclusively by beauticians in beauty salons or cosmetic studios, and cosmetic samples such as those distributed free at hotels are not subject to the ingredient labeling rules. They must, however, state the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor, and give an accurate statement of quantity and all necessary warning statements, as do all other cosmetics that weigh over one-fourth ounce or one-eighth fluid ounce.

Cosmetics That Are Also Drugs

Cosmetics making therapeutic claims that they may affect the structure or function of the body are regulated as drugs and cosmetics and must meet the labeling requirements for both. One way you can tell if you're dealing with such a product is if the first entry in the ingredient list says "Active Ingredient." (The active ingredient is the chemical that makes the product effective, and it must be safe for its intended use.) However, active ingredients are not legally required to be identified by this term. The law does require the active ingredient(s) to be listed first, followed by a list of all inactive cosmetic ingredients.

Examples of products that are both cosmetics and drugs are shampoos that treat dandruff, fluoride toothpastes to prevent dental decay, and sunscreens and sunblocking cosmetics, including foundations that contain sunscreens. (See "Dodging the Rays" in the July-August 1993 FDA Consumer.)

A product with a drug and cosmetic classification must be scientifically proven safe and effective for its therapeutic claims before it is marketed. If the product is not, FDA considers it to be a misbranded drug and can take regulatory action.

Preventing Problems

Under FDA's good manufacturing practice guidelines, even cosmetic products that are not regulated as drugs should be thoroughly tested for safety and subject to quality control during manufacture. But the law does not require the agency to review these tests before the cosmetics are marketed. Nevertheless, FDA does require safety warnings when problems become apparent.

Misuse of some cosmetic products can cause problems that range in severity from a mild rash to skin burns, or from burning eyes to blindness.

Look for warnings about the consequences of misuse required on products that could be hazardous, in addition to the detailed directions for use that appear on almost all cosmetics.

For example, products containing halocarbon or hydrocarbon propellants, such as aerosol hairsprays or deodorants, must bear the exact wording:

"Warning--Use only as directed. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents can be harmful or fatal."

All cosmetics in self-pressurized containers, such as shaving creams, must have specifically worded warnings against spraying near the eyes, puncturing, incinerating, storing, and intentionally misusing.

"Keep out of the reach of children" is also required for all products in pressurized containers. In the case of products intended for use by children, such as foaming soap, the phrase "except under adult supervision" may be added.

Other products requiring specific wording include:

Detergent bubble bath products-- may irritate skin and the urinary tract through excessive use or prolonged exposure. The labeling instructs users to discontinue the product if rash, redness or itching occur, to consult a physician if imitation persists, and to keep out of reach of children. These adverse reactions reportedly occur mostly with prolonged soaks. According to some studies, the adverse reactions either subside or disappear with discontinued use. In 1987, FDA started requiting all foaming detergent bath products not labeled as intended for exclusive adult use to display the caution statement in addition to directions for use.
Feminine deodorant sprays intended for use in the genital area-- are for external use only and should not be applied to broken, irritated or itching skin. A physician should be consulted if persistent, unusual odor or discharge occurs, The statement instructs users to discontinue immediately if rash, irritation or discomfort develops. Labeling on self-pressurized containers must state that the product should be sprayed at least 8 inches from the skin.
Coal-tar color-containing hair-dye products-- contain ingredients that may cause skin irritation on certain individuals, and a preliminary test according to the product's accompanying directions should first be made. Users are cautioned not to dye eyelashes or eyebrows because doing so may cause blindness. In addition, the ammonia, soaps, detergents, conditioning agents, and dyes in hair-dye products are all strong eye irritants and could also cause allergic reactions in other areas. (See "Hair Dye Dilemmas" in the April 1993 FDA Consumer.)

The following products require explicit warnings, though not with specific wording:

Depilatories and hair straighteners-- are highly alkaline; if they are used incorrectly, they may cause serious skin irritation.
Shampoos, rinses and conditioners-- can cause eye problems that range from irritation to permanent damage. If the eye's cornea is scratched or otherwise damaged, a contaminated product could cause infection. These cosmetics, as well as others that contain water, usually have antimicrobials that discourage growth of bacteria.
Nail builders (elongators, extenders, hardeners, and enamels)-- can cause irritation, inflammation and infection of the nail bed and nail fold (where the nail meets the finger) due to residual traces of the methacrylate monomers. Also, nail hardeners and enamels often contain formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, which may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to them. In addition, the solvents or plasticizers may be irritating. Nail enamels that are also nail hardeners cause the most problems. Their high resin content or low concentration of plasticizer seals the nail surface to air and makes the nail too brittle. Another frequent problem is flammability during and shortly after application. These products require a flammability caution.
Flammable products such as aerosol hair sprays containing alcohol and isobutane propellant-- include caution statements on the label. Also, the label usually cautions about avoiding heat, fire and smoking during use until the product is fully dry. Last year, FDA received reports of a fatality that occurred from burns suffered when a woman's hair ignited. Apparently, she tried to light a cigarette before her hair spray had completely dried.

Manufacturers often use warning statements on labels when there is even a small chance of a problem. Baby products often contain such warnings. Baby powder. for example, if used carelessly and accidentally inhaled by the baby in large amounts, can block the infant's bronchial and lung passages and cause suffocation. Cosmetic labels are more than product advertising. They connect cosmetic science with consumer protection by providing a means for consumers to know what's in a product and how to safely use it. A wise consumer will take the time to read the label to get the best value and results without incurring any of the possible harmful effects.

8. Practice until you get it right. It's ok if you don't get it right the first time. With a little practice you'll master the skill.

5 Skin Care Tips for Women Living in Cold Weather

When winter hits many of us take our skin for granted, believing that our skin is moist enough to withstand the onslaught of cold, dry air in the coming season. Women who live in parts of the world where cold freezing temperatures wreak havoc on skin understand that no amount of rain or wet snow can replenish it. By taking a few protective measures anyone living in a naturally cold place can preserve the moisture in their skin and avoid having the dry itchy flakies and here are five tips to help you do just that.

1. Exfoliate Your Skin. Before you take a shower you need to remove old dead skin from your body. This allows the fresh new skin beneath to breathe and absorb moisture. Get yourself a good natural bristled body brush and use large sweeping motions to massage your skin. You'll also be helping to stimulate blood flow and help reduce cellulite as an added bonus.

2. Use sun screen. Sun screen wasn't just invented for summer time use. We should be protecting our skin from harmful sun rays all year long. Dangerous UV rays are actually stronger in the winter and can be far more damaging to your skin if left exposed. There are cosmetic companies now including UV ray protection in their foundations such as Cover Girl TruBlend Powder Foundation Sunscreen. It works like a sunscreen but its still make-up.

3. Apply moisturizer. The cold outdoors is not the only thing that dries out your skin. The air indoors is much drier due to heaters being run and lack of fresh outside air being circulated inside. The only way to combat that is to apply moisturizer. It's best to apply an all-over body moisturizer at least twice a day; once in the morning and once before bed. A real good all-over moisturizer is Eucerin or Lubriderm. Both of these moisturizers are fairly cheap in price and can be found in any drugstore, Wal-Mart or Target stores. Eucerin also has a moisturizer that has added SPF sun blocking agents. If you've got money to spend then give the Neutrogena SPF 15 moisturizer a try as it does a great job at soaking right in to your skin without the added oils.

4. Use Carmex or other Lip Balm. It gets very easy to neglect our lips when we spend all day yacking or stuffing our faces but protecting our lips is very important. To keep your lips from getting chapped the first thing you should do is stop licking them. When you repeatedly lick your lips you are actually removing moisture and causing them to get even more chapped. To eliminate the huge red ring around your mouth rub a little Vaseline on the area before going to sleep.

5. Use sleeping time to replenish the moisture in your hands and feet by applying moisture and sleeping with socks and gloves on. You can wear socks on your hands as well as your feet but be sure they are 100% cotton. I prefer Hanes cotton socks but brand doesn't really matter. Curel makes a moisturizer that works well on both hands and feet but let me tell you about a secret product I recently found at Target.

Burts Bees. It's absolutely delicious smelling and wonderfully nourishing. My skin loves this stuff and I have very dry skin. Burts Bees Mama Bee vitamin E body oil is an all over moisturizer made of almond, lemon oils and vitamin E and the best time to use it is right out of the shower. I love that it doesn't leave my skin feeling oily or slick and best of all it only cost me $8 for a 4 ounce bottle.

Recently I was watching one of the music channels on cable and began watching a show on a lazy afternoon. The show, “Gay, Straight or Taken” has the premise of a young lovely woman being given a day with three men and she has to figure out which on is gay, the one who is straight and of course, the one who is taken. If she selects the right one who is straight, then they go off on a vacation together. If she mistakenly picks one of the others, then they, with their respective mate, go instead. My point to this tangent is, that on the show I happened to see, she was allowed to rifle through their overnight bag and dap kit. When looking, she based her “Gay” choice on the fact that one guy had all types of skin care, astringents and face creams in his kit. Thus is the mystery of men.

Does it mean that he has to be gay or metro-sexual to want to take care of his skin? Well that should not be the case. There are many products on the market which are in no way “girlie”. Men in most ways need skin care as much, if not more, than women. The daily sun, wind, stress and neglect can wear on skin. Men have approximately 25% more oily skin than most women. The pores of men are of course, generally larger as well. Keeping the face clean and even use of deep cleaning is essential.

Moisturizing and sun protection are the next important tasks. Especially important is to moisturize under the eye. This area shows age faster since it produces no oils itself. Vitamin E is great for this. Try to go as natural as possible since chemicals can be harsh and not as easily absorbed. SPF is important in moisturizer as well. Most women’s makeup has some type of SPF in it, however, since men don’t wear base, that isn’t an issue.

When cleansing the skin remember not to use a deodorant soap on your face! This is the first thing people see on you, so don’t go harsh. Deodorant soaps are harsh and leave detergent on your face that will block your pores. This is not good. A good scrub or exfoliant should be done daily. Be careful not to use large grits such as seed or nut pieces. These are too harsh for daily care and may damage dry skin.

I’ll admit it. For most of my life, my skin has been my main vanity. My clear complexion was the envy of friends and relatives, and I never had to do much to maintain it. Concealer? Foundation? Ha! I laughed at such cover-ups.

But recently, all that changed. My skin just seemed—well, blah. Worse, I began developing blemishes, and examination with a magnifying mirror revealed uneven skin tone. So an infomercial for mineral makeup, with its promises of a flawless, but not cakey-fakey, finish, mesmerized me. I went online and found a starter kit.

The hardest part about the process was choosing the right shade. The starter sets I was eyeing came with two shades to allow mixing and matching for a just-right shade, but it was still a challenge to determine the right one from a tiny computerized swatch. Ultimately, I enlisted the aid of my husband, who examined my face next to the computer screen in good light.

The results? Amazing! I’ve been using the makeup for the last eight months. I never look like I’m wearing five pounds of makeup (my fear after growing up in Texas), but my skin looks flawless. I use the lighter of two shades sent to me, as well as a rust-colored version simply called warmth on my cheeks, with just a light additional sweep over my nose, chin, and forehead. (Caution—use the lightest possible touch with this shade or risk looking like an Oompa-Loompa.) A concealer brush, which applies the base shade in a more concentrated fashion, is perfect for all but the most vicious blemishes. In those cases, I do use a real concealer just on those spots underneath the makeup.

The biggest complaint I’ve heard from others is that the finish, while flawless, can look almost plasticized—like a Barbie doll. I’ll concede that it does have a slight sheen, and this effect is usually emphasized by a too-heavy hand. However, using a lighter hand, as well as finishing with another product from the starter kit, the mineral veil, usually reduces this effect. Overall, I think the makeup still looks much more natural that other options do. It’s also a bit more change out of pocket initially, but I found that even the smaller containers lasted almost six months (longer for the warmth).

No makeup can ever claim it won’t clog anyone’s pores—even the gentlest might gunk up someone’s super-sensitive skin—but the finely milled, breathable nature of this makeup greatly lessens that chance for most. I also love not using something with a long list of chemicals I can’t pronounce.

The bottom line is that this is one of the best products I’ve purchased in recent memory.

Choosing your shade of foundation make up may seem intimidating, but it's not as bad as it may seem. Simply swipe two or three colors that are close to your natural skin color along your jaw line. You want the make-up to disappear into your skin. If it doesn't, move along until you find one that does.

Next, you will need to choose your finish and coverage. Are you looking for a sheer, dewy look or something matte and long lasting? A sheer look works well for clear skin that requires little coverage. Think of a fresh-faced teen for a dewy look. Matte is a very formal look, and is great for an oily complexion.

If all of this sounds overwhelming to you, schedule an appointment for a consultation at your favorite department store with a make up artist. This is typically a free service. Talk to them about your lifestyle and needs. Are you active at the gym? Do you prefer very little makeup? Do you need more coverage to hide blemishes and scarring? They will help you choose a foundation that is right for your skin type and lifestyle.

Once you have selected the foundation make up that is right for you, you need to prep your face so your foundation goes on smoothly.

Primers are getting a lot of recognition lately, and rightfully so. They help your foundation glide on like silk and give it staying power. One to try is Laura Mercier. Another option is to prep with moisturizer.

Now it's time to apply your foundation make up. There are mixed opinions on application. A sponge works well and is easy to blend, although many make-up artists insist on a brush. I think both work just fine and it is a matter of personal preference. I use a brush for the initial application, and blend with a sponge. Blending your foundation into your neck is so important. Do not forget this step or you will have a visible line, and we all know what that looks like don't we?

Concealer should be applied one shade lighter where you are dark, and the same shade as your foundation where you need to cover redness. Look for a concealer that is water based. This is the biggest error women make when choosing concealer. The majority clogs your pores, so the blemishes you are trying to cover are just being replaced!

Finally, dust translucent loose powder over your entire face with a large brush. Skip this step if you want a dewy look.

How To Apply Smokey Eye Make Up

The smokey eye is one make up trend that has become a classic. If you haven't mastered it yet, now is the perfect time!

Follow these seven steps to achieve the smokey eye look.

Step 1. You must start with a good under eye concealer. Always choose one shade lighter than your skin tone, and completely cover any dark circles. Since the smokey eye is very dark, you want to be certain you have good coverage here. If this is a stubborn area for you, (like it is for me) swipe a small amount of liquid highlighter under your eyes and blend with a brush gently. This should do the trick; however, practice before you wear it out.

Step 2. Using an eye shadow brush, dust your entire eyelid, from lash line to brow, with a shimmer pearl eye shadow.

Step 3. With a black eye pencil, draw a line along the upper lashes, as close to the lash line as possible. Start thin at the inner corner of the eye, gradually getting thicker as you work your way out. If you want to take it beyond your natural lash line, flick it up and out.

Step 4. As close to the lower lash line as possible, draw a thin line. You can stop either one third of the way in, or take it all of the way to the inner corner. It all depends on how dramatic of a look you want. It also depends on your eyes. For example, if you have wide set eyes, you can line them all the way in, but if you have little space between your eyes, only line around 1/3 of the way in as this will make your eyes appear more wide set. Play around with both and see what looks best on you.

Step 5. With black liquid eyeliner, draw a line over the line you just drew with the pencil. This gives it staying power. The reason you apply your liquid liner after your pencil is two-fold. 1) You are simply tracing a line that is already there, making it much easier 2) Liquid liners typically have a bit of a glossy finish, which is very attractive.

Step 6. With a dark grey eye shadow, and an eyeliner brush, dip the brush into the eye shadow and draw a line right above the liquid liner, blending upward into the crease. This is what creates the smokey look. I use Bobbi Brown's eye liner brush because it's thin enough, but not to stiff.

Step 7. Coat top and bottom lashes with two coats of black mascara.

Don't feel that you have to stick with blacks and greys. Feel free to play around with different colors, as long as the prominent colors are dark shades. I have done this look with shimmer blues and emerald greens, and it has always looked very sexy.

To make your eyes pop, apply a dab of white shadow to the inner corner of each eye with the tip of an eyeliner brush. I do this with everybody and it instantly brings them to life!

The smokey eye look does take a bit of practice, but it is well worth it. It is a sultry evening look that looks great on just about everyone.

Lip gloss is a favorite for all age groups. What's so great about lip gloss is its versatility. I've already put some on, and rushed to the gym, just to add a little color. It's also great for the office as long as its not super sparkly or wet looking. Lip gloss is also the perfect accessory for a night out.

Lip gloss can be worn alone, over lipstick, or over lip liner; it all depends on the look you want to achieve. Lip gloss is available in a zillion colors and finishes. There is sheer lip gloss, lip gloss with more color, almost like a lipstick, and lip glosses that are somewhere in between.

Lip gloss that will stay put long after a lipstick wears are off are, Bobbi Brown and NARS. These are thick and more opaque. You wouldn't need to wear anything under these, unless you choose to.

There are super sparkly lip glosses that you see on a lot of teens and twenty something's, and even with the sparkly varieties, there is extreme sparkle and subtle sparkle. A subtle sparkle can be worn by women of most ages.

There are certain guidelines for lip gloss with each age group.

Lip gloss in your 20's - Anything go's. You're young so have fun! Go for vibrant colors and experiment with sparkle. You are the trend-setters, so people expect to see fun colors on you. If you work in an office, always tone it down, remember, you want to be taken seriously.

Lip gloss in your 30's – You’re still very young and can enjoy many trends. You want to avoid extreme sparkle, as it will only make you look older. Don't go overboard on lip gloss that looks dripping wet, it looks over the top.

Lip gloss in your 40's - You are the new twenty so enjoy it! In your forties you want to avoid trends like sparkle and wet-looks. There are many glosses available that you can wear, just avoid extremes. If you love a color but find it too sheer, choose a similar colored lipstick, wear one or two coats, and top it with gloss.

When wearing lip gloss for a Saturday afternoon, run to the market, or quick workout (yes, some of us wear it to the gym,) there is no need to wear anything underneath. The look is low key, so opt for light colors.

For the office, always go for neutral tones, avoid extremes such as sparkle or slick lip gloss.

For evening go for bolder color and age appropriate shimmer. Wear one or two coats of lipstick underneath to give your lip gloss staying power.

There are much to consider when you select and apply blush. The following blush tips will describe different types of blush as well as how to apply the blush. Experiment to find which is best for you, but most importantly, do not be intimidated by this make up essential. It can a bring dull complexion to life within seconds. The secret key, is choosing the right texture and color for your skin.

Powder Blush ~ Using a large blush brush, apply in a “C” motion on the upper apples of your cheeks towards your temples. You can also think of your cheek as an inverted pyramid. It may sound silly, but this will give you the perfect application just where you need it. You don't want to see lines. You are trying to create a flush appearance.

Powder blush is very easy to apply, and very long wearing. Apply over foundation, on bare skin, or over powder. This is the most versatile way to apply blush. I do not recommend powder blush for extremely dry skin. It will only make your skin appear dryer, and draw attention to fine lines.

Cream Blush ~ Apply on the apples of your cheeks in a circular motion, working outwards and slightly upward. Apply sparingly as the coverage is buildable. It is easier to add more blush than to have to wash off your make up if you slab too much on. Cream blush can be worn on bare skin or over foundation. I love to mix it with liquid high-liter for a fresh, dewy look. If you are oily, powder blush is a better option.

Liquid Tint ~ Best when applied on bare skin. You need to get this on fast! It dries quickly. I recommend practicing a few times before wearing it out. This is a very natural look. You will look like you just came in from a good work out.

We know that some women are hesitant when it comes to wearing blush. I never quite understood this. Do they actually think they look better with a dull and lifeless complexion? The fact of the matter is, unless you just came from the gym, or are 16 years old - chances are - you need a little color.

So you can try a little, and if you absolutely hate the way you look, stop by your local department stores cosmetics counter, and have a make up artist give you a complimentary consultation.
